Queens Road Bowling Club
The Queens Road Bowling Club was formed on Thursday, 4 March, 1954 at a meeting held at the YMCA under the chairmanship of W.G. Harries who was deputising for J.O. Jones, the Postmaster of Aberystwyth.

On a proposal from Mr. Lewis J.Williams and seconded by Mr. Llew Wright, a committee was formed to go ahead with the formation of a bowling league at Queens Road Recreation Ground. The committee consisted of J.O. Jones, L.J. Williams, T. Hughes, I. Rudd and E.O. Ellis.

Aberystwyth town council granted the league of use of two rinks per evening from 6’Oclock to dusk Modays to Fridays inclusive. This was subject to the payment of ten shillings per rink per evening.

The league started with 24 teams participating and well over 100 players. So there seemed to be no shortage of Bowlers in Aberystwyth. No one could have foressen then, how the league has flourished into being the great success it is today with nearly twice as many members. Over 90 teams have participated in the league during its first 25 years, at some stage or another.

Although the numbers of teams in the league dropped during the sixties, they increased again in the early 70’s, so much so the two divisions had to be formed to accommodate them all.

Not only has the league now firmly established itself, the Queens Road Bowling Club as a member of the Cardigan County League, has shown itself to be a team to be reckoned with. Since joining the County League in 1973 the Club has not once been out of the top three. A momentous climax was reached in 1975 when Queens Road Bowling won the Cardigan County League for the first time.

Also the club won the Cambrian News Bowl in 1975 having been the beaten finalists at their first attempt in 1970.

This showed the club to be a nursery for quality players who have become recognised Coutny players and some have gone on to win honours in the game at both County and National level. During the past six years, six County Championships have come the way of the club.

One honour has already been attained by the club in 1979. Mr Barry Davies, our club President last year, has been installed as County President.

Let’s hope that during the next 25 years, the Club will win some more homours, not only on a County level, but perhaps on a National level.
